Mufi Hannemann

Personal Life:

Muliufi ‘Mufi’ Hannemann (born July 16, 1954, Honolulu, Hawaii) is an American politician of the Democratic party and former Mayor of Honolulu, Hawaii.



Hannemann is a Harvard University graduate, and continued with his studies as a Fullbright Scholar at Victoria University in Wellington, New Zealand.


Professional Career:

Hanneman became a History teacher at Iolani School upon return from New Zealand to Hawaii. Then after his teaching career he ventured into public service.

In 1986 and 1990, Hannemann ran for the First District U.S House seat and Second District seas, but lost both times.

In 2000, Hannemann ran for Mayor against then-Mayor Jeremy Harris, who he had previous differences in opinions with during his time serving with Harris as a Council Chairman from 1998-99. Hannemann lost the election, and Harris re-elected in September 2000.

In 2004, Hannemann ran for Mayor again and served two terms winning both the 2004 and 2008 elections. He resigned from his position in July 2010 as Mayor to compete in the 2010 Hawaii gubernatorial election in September, but lost the Democratic primary to Neil Ambercrombie.

Hannemann announced on August 30, 2011 that he will run for Hawaii’s 2nd Congressional District seat in the 2012 U.S House elections.
